What is the course about?

This course is designed to assist students in developing a portfolio of creative work for entry into third level art and design colleges.

Guided by a team of specialist lecturers, students will work in the fine art studio and workshops, having time, space and support to develop ideas and skills over the eight day course duration.

Beginning with an introduction to core observational and drawing skills, the course also includes painting, printmaking, photography, animation and sculpture. Students will end the course with a number of completed artworks, and equipped with skills and techniques to compile their own diverse artistic portfolio.

Materials will be provided.

  • Drawing: Fundamentals of drawing through use of a variety of materials and techniques.  
  • Painting: Introduction to colour theory, mixing and colour matching with paint.  
  • Sketchbooks: Developing a sketchbook practice, and understanding importance of sketchbooks to any creative process.   
  • Printmaking: Working in the Crawford College’s printmaking studio.  
  • Sculpture: Three dimensional construction, including working with clay in the Ceramics workshop. 
  • Photography: Introduction to photography and digital media, including lighting, composition, image editing and documenting artworks.  
  • Animation: Hand-drawn and stop-motion animation.  
  • Compiling portfolio: selecting & documenting work created over the course and compiling a digital portfolio.
