This year, MTU Crawford College of Art & Design (CCAD) hosts activities by MTU alumni, students, staff and invited artists at our iconic 19th century building, a part of MTU CCAD Campus, at 46 Grand Parade, Cork City, T12 VN56.

MTU Arts Collection - Selected works showcasing MTU CCAD graduate work. MTU Gallery at 46 Grand Parade

The MTU Gallery at 46 Grand Parade hosts a selection work the acquisitions of the MTU Arts Collection, a selection of works acquired from students of MTU Crawford College of Art & Design graduates from the past 3 decades.

Artist include: Oonagh Hurley, Rebecca Ajeigbe, Cliona O’Sullivan, Elisa Feirtéar, Edel O'Reilly, Margaret Hogan, Aneta Sawicka, Issac Stillwell, Pauline Gibbons, Camilla Winquist, Siobhan O Connor, Ava Hayes, Lucy Quane, Catherine Hennessey, Petrina Shortt, Siofra Holyland, Rebecca Bradley and Amanda Mulley - exhibiting a beautiful selection of paintings, photographs, prints, textiles and projection.

The Reclaim Project is a community space challenging power abuse in the arts through creative collaboration. Witness the force of creatives emerging in solidarity and strength through an exhibition of The Reclaim Project posters, and feel invited to add your voice as an artist.  

Ground floor alcove, 5pm – 9pm  

 

Broken Fields is a multi-disciplinary collective made up of individual practitioners Louise Harrington, Enya Moore, Aideen O' Donovan and Kate O' Shea. Broken Fields brings together experience, knowledge and practice from the fields of socially engaged art, architecture, community work, activism, research and writing. The name Broken Fields refers to the breaking down of disciplines, siloes and fields. In the breaking down of these constructed boundaries, Broken Fields brings together the strengths of diverse practices in processes, projects and spaces that are deeply place-based. Enter the Broken Fields installation in the micro-gallery window space, alone or with another, to experience the impact of such social spaces in limited environments.   Micro Gallery window space, 5pm-9pm.   

The installation will continue from 18th September to 6th October  

 

 

Drawbridge presents an exhibition highlighting their work as a drawing research hub based at MTU Crawford College of Art & Design. Founded by Dr Helen Farrell and Dr Lucy Dawe-Lane, Drawbridge came about to provide opportunities for researchers, students and artists to explore, exchange and disseminate ideas around contemporary drawing practice in its widest possible interpretation. With a focus on promoting the capability of drawing to give form to thought, Drawbridge is currently engaging with diverse approaches from within the arts, while also working on a series of interdisciplinary projects and collaborations. Studio 3 5pm-9pm.

Homesick - Creativity & Change, in collaboration with Financial Justice Ireland, present an interactive exhibition highlighting the effects of unequal financial systems like tax, trade and debt, featuring the creative responses of artists Neltah Chadamoyo, Kate O' Shea and Elisa Babkina Studio 4 5pm-9pm.

    

Film screenings

 

Crawford Supported Studios works from a belief that creative expression is our first language. The project supports the artistic engagement of artists with intellectual disabilities. It challenges us as cultural institutions to consider strengths-based approaches to ability and education, and fresh approaches to gallery programming, amplify marginalized voices and enabling more equitable civic participation. 

Looped screening of a beautiful series of artists portraits on film, co-created with photographer/filmmaker Clare Keogh. Studio 2 5pm-9pm.

 

MEDIAHOMES is an interdisciplinary project across the humanities and the social sciences. It investigates representations of the housing crisis in Europe across essays films, documentaries, and other non-fiction screen media, looking in particular at Irish, Portuguese and British women filmmakers. Join research fellow Anna Viola Sborgi (UCC) for short film screenings and a discussion around the place of media in social justice.

Lecture Space; 6pm-7pm  

  

Homofónia A film by Alana Daly Mulligan and Luke K. Murphy. "As their Debs application deadline approaches, a closeted couple must sort their domestic issues as Gaeilge to prevent their classmates from knowing they’re an item. However, translation issues leave their relationship in jeopardy." The film screening will accompany an artist talk and discussion about the rights of the LGBTQAI+ community around the world  

Lecture Space, Film 7.15pm (15 minutes), followed by artist presentation and Q&A, 7.30-7.50pm.  

Film in Changemaking Panel discussion hosted by Chriszine Backhouse (Creativity & Change) featuring Alana Daly Mulligan and actor Aoife Commons (Homofonia), Anna Viola Sborgi (MEDIAHOMES) and filmmaker Linda Curtin around the role and power of socially-engaged, film-making.

Workshops

 

Isteach Cork host a 'box-head' making workshop, inviting young and old to raise awareness of housing inequality through creating house-shaped masks, inspired by Cork's now-iconic mural by street artist Asbestos. Have your photo taken and keep your box-head to wear around Culture Night, or feel welcome to add it to the Isteach collection, as part of the Homesick exhibition in Studio 4.  Studio 1: Drop-in, 30-minute sessions every half-hour from 6pm-8.30pm
