Draw to Perform Visits MTU Crawford College of Art & Design

Workshop run by Ram Samocha from Brighton based Draw to Perform

MTU Crawford College of Art and Design in collaboration with Backwater Artists Studios

February 19th 2019

The Drawing Performance lecture and workshop was an exciting, informative and experiential opportunity for over 30 undergraduate and postgraduate students from MTU Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork. The workshops were held by artist Ram Samocha from Draw to Perform – an international community for Drawing Performance based in Brighton, UK.

The day began with a comprehensive lecture explaining  drawing as performance under headings such as Live Drawing Actions, Drawing with Unconventional Materials and Drawing in Public Collaborations. This approach gave students the opportunity to gain an understanding of the processes involved in the drawing performance movement. The lecture covered historical references to help put the practice of drawing as performative act into context and the more contemporary references, such as Trisha Brown, Paul McCarthy and Tonya McMullan gave the students a sense of the relevance of drawing performance in contemporary practice.

Putting theory into practice, Samocha and students took part in two drawing workshops consisting of various individual and group exercises. While proving to be both challenging and rewarding, the actions and exercises of the day sparked exciting conversation and produced thought-provoking pieces of art.
